We invite you to apply for a Postdoctoral Appointment with Argonne’s Electrochemical Materials and Interfaces Group. The purpose of this appointment is experimental studies to develop novel coatings for sulfide-based solid electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries, and to understand the surface and interfacial (electro)chemistry of both lithium metal anodes and high voltage cathodes in contact with these materials. This position will work with a collaborative, interdisciplinary team with expertise in materials synthesis, characterization and theoretical understanding to optimize performance for scalable, high energy density all-solid-state batteries.

This position is open immediately and is based on renewable yearly contract. Interested candidates should submit a full CV. Names/contact of three referees will be solicited.

Position Requirements

Required:

  • Ph.D. in an experimental discipline, such as chemistry, materials science or a related engineering field is required; received within the past 5 years or upcoming year
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Considerable experience with ultrahigh vacuum system operation and maintenance
  • Extensive background and experience with data collection and analysis using at least one of the following techniques is required, all is preferred: secondary ion mass spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy.
  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

Preferred:

  • Experience with thin film deposition tools (e.g., magnetron sputtering, pulsed laser deposition, electron beam evaporation)
  • Experience with electrochemical methods such as cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy
  • Experience with solid-state ion conductors
