Argonne National Laboratory invites applications from outstanding candidates with a background in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for postdoctoral research positions in the area of developing large-scale foundation models for advancing science. In this role, you will work on the AuroraGPT project, an ambitious new initiative at Argonne that aims to revolutionize scientific and engineering research by building an advanced AI model specifically tuned for science.

Applications are solicited from candidates with expertise in any area of AI foundation model development including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Multi-modal architectures for science
  • Data strategies for model training
  • Model training on large scale systems
  • AI evaluation and safety for science
  • Model fine tuning and instruct tuning
  • Inference acceleration
  • Surrogate models
  • Applications of foundation models for accelerating discovery

In this role, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with a large number of Argonne scientists working in the area of AI for Science and to run on advanced supercomputing facilities at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF), including the Aurora exascale system, other GPU-based systems, as well as specialized AI hardware from vendors such as Cerebras, SambaNova, Graphcore, Intel Habana, and Groq.

These positions are available immediately, but there is flexibility in start dates.

Position Requirements

  • PhD (completed within the last 5 years or soon to be completed) in computer science, physical sciences, engineering, or related field
  • Research experience in any area of foundation model development listed above
  • Experience with machine learning methods and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch
  • Knowledge of software development practices and techniques for computational and data-intensive science problems
  • Effective collaboration skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork
