The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division is seeking a postdoctoral appointee who, under the guidance of a supervisor, conducts research in the design and syntheses of organic, organometallic, or polymer materials for energy storage purposes.
The project is an interdisciplinary position with the focus on organic materials, used as new solvation systems, electrocatalysts, and solid-state batteries – syntheses, characterization and testing of such materials in a battery set up such as zinc air batteries.
The work includes synthesis and characterization of organic, organometallic, and polymeric compounds, interacting with other groups, and evaluating bulk, electrochemical and interfacial properties using techniques such as galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and FTIR to understand the mechanisms.
Under the guidance of a supervisor, design, synthesize, and characterize organic, organometallic, and polymeric materials. Conduct electrochemical/chemical/physical characterization (galvanostatic cycling, NMR, FTIR, Echem) of these systems towards energy storage applications.
Design and carry out new experimental procedures for understanding of the electrolyte systems. Analyzes data, prepares manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications. Attends and makes presentations at scientific meetings; and prepares reports, presentations, and papers for group meetings.
Position Requirements
This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in organic/organometallic/polymer chemistry or materials sciences at the Ph.D. degree level with zero to five years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience
Considerable knowledge of and experimental expertise in organic/organometallic/polymer chemistry and electrochemistry
Extensive knowledge of electrolytes in energy storage materials
Considerable interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skill
Ability to keep abreast of pertinent scientific literature
Experience with Schlenk techniques and glove boxes. Experience with standard electroanalytical techniques (CV, galvanostatic charging/discharging with MACCOR) and a range of characterization instruments (NMR, SEM, FTIR and Raman) would be an asset
