We are seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral candidate to conduct cutting-edge research on the structural response of Sn-Vacancy qubits under uniaxial strain. This project aims to explore and understand the underlying reasons for enhanced temperature resilience of operational qubits, which have demonstrated increased spin-time coherence lengths at elevated temperatures, from 1.7K to ~4K with 0.1% applied strain. The research will combine synchrotron X-ray scattering (both diffraction and fluorescence) with photoluminescence spectroscopy to measure strain induced enhanced qubit performance.

The successful candidate will both contribute to advancing our understanding of structure related qubit behavior under variable strain conditions for quantum information science applications and developing a dedicated in-situ cryostat focused on combining synchrotron x-ray scattering with photoluminescence spectroscopy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform synchrotron X-ray diffraction and fluorescence experiments to measure strain effects on Sn-Vacancy qubits in single crystal diamond membranes.

  • Integrate photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy with X-ray scattering to analyze qubit response at low temperatures.

  • Analyze temperature-dependent coherence times of qubits under applied strain.

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop experimental setups for uniaxial strain application.

  • Present findings at scientific conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.

Position Requirements

  • This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in Physics, Materials Science, Quantum Information Science, or a related field at the PhD level with zero to five years of employment experience.

  • Strong expertise in photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy or Raman spectroscopy.

  • Knowledge of quantum information science and coherence properties of qubits.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, ability to work independently, and effective communication of research results.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

  • Ability to understand, value, and promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience with X-ray scattering techniques (diffraction or fluorescence) is highly desirable.

  • Experience with uniaxial strain applications is a plus.
